Tallinn - Upper Citadel

The "Upper Citadel" lies on a hill at 48 m above the sea level, in the place where the tomb of the national hero Kalev is said to be kept. The Toompea castle is a medieval fortress founded in 1229 and characterised by four towers placed at each corner, but today only 3 of them remain standing. The tallest of these towers, called "the long Hermann", has a dimension of 45 m. The underground was used for the executions of prisoners. After the conquer of the city by the Danish king Waldemar II in 1219, Toompea remained for centuries the seat of foreign powers: the Danish, the Teutonic Order, the Swedish and the Russian governors). Over the centuries, the Toompea Hill became the favourite spot of aristocrats, who chose to build here their winter residences, as testified by the several elegant buildings in classic style which can be seen in Kothu street, in the heart of the citadel.

Toompea - Tallinn

In present days Toompea still represents the centre of the political and institutional power. In fact all the major institutions are based here: the Parliament (Riigikogu), the Estonian government, foreign embassies and ministries. The hill is also one of the most panoramic points of the city, from where to enjoy an amazing view on the roofs of the Old Town and toward the sea.
