Just after its foundation, the city was provided with massive walls to defend itself from the enemies. The defence system was enlarged over the course of the centuries, and in the 16th century Tallinn boasted one of the most impregnable defensive systems in Northern Europe.

The wall belt was made up of 4 km walls, with a height of 16 m and a maximum thickness of 3 m, and 46 watching towers, which embraced the entire Old Town. The town wall collapsed several times over the centuries, and today only half of it remains standing, with 26 towers. The towers and the connecting passages can be partially visited, and from them you can enjoy an amazing view on the roofs of the Old Town and over the Toompea Hill.
