The most ancient catholic monastery of the Old Town was founded in 1246. St. Catherine's church stands out from the complex with its impressive bulk. The monastery remained active until 1525, when the coming of the Protestant Reformation forced its closure, and the monks were sent in exile. In 1531 the desecrated church was razed to the ground by a fire. Today only some sections of the walls and a portion of the southern tower remain. Inside the complex is an exhibit on the art of stonemasonry in Tallinn, and some concerts often take place.
