Tallinn - The Church of St. Nicholas's

The 13th century church was built in honour of St. Nicholas, protector of sailors, and was originally meant as a fortress. Over the years the church has been adjusted numerous times, but it was the only church of the Old Town to be saved from the destruction of icons ordered by the Lutheran Reformation in 1523. Unfortunately the structure was severely damaged by the air raids of the Second World War.

St Nicholas - Tallinn

The late-Gothic chapel of St. Anthony and the Renaissance foyer are particularly worthy of note, as well as the main altar, where scenes of the Saint's life are narrated. The initial section of the 15th century painting "Macabre Dance" by the North European artist Berndt Notke of Lübeck is of great value. In present days the church keeps some of the most important artworks of Estonian art, and thanks to the excellent acoustic of the building, music concerts are often held here
