This magnificent cathedral is a work by the architect Preobrazhenski, and it is the most opulent and impressive orthodox cathedral in Tallinn. The construction of the church was ordered by the Tsar as a symbol of the political and religious power of the Soviet Empire in Estonia.

The mammoth dimensions of the building and its position above the Old Town confirm this symbolic function. The cathedral is dedicated to prince Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky, who in 1242 accomplished a legendary deed in chasing away the German crusaders.

The tower of the cathedral is made up of 11 bells, of which the biggest one is 3 m high. The inside is finely decorated with mosaics and icons.
