Tallinn is the Baltic's northernmost capital. Looking over the Baltic Sea, just 80 kilometres from Helsinki, it is the main port and economic centre of Estonia. The origin of the name Tallinn hasn't been completely ascertained, however, it probably comes from the ancient Estonian language, with three possible meanings of "castle of the landlord" , "Danish castle" and " winter castle". The name was lately transformed in the current Tallinn, which was borrowed from the Danish language during the period of the Danish occupation (1219-1346). The name became official only in 1933.
